Miners trade gold dust for food
and supplies. During the Gold Rush, gold dust, measured into leather pouches, was
the medium of exchange for most merchants and traders who did business with the miners.
Gold hunters could swap gold dust for sacks of flour, beans, sides of bacon, molasses,
gunpowder and other necessities. Prices were frequently exorbitant - at one point,
a dozen eggs cost $10.
